Admitting mistakes is painful for most of us. The brain defends our sense of being right until the very last moment, because for the brain, “I was wrong” often equals “I’m stupid” or “I’m in danger.”
Everyone knows the comforting phrases: “everyone makes mistakes,” “mistakes are how we learn.” But let’s be honest: nobody likes admitting their misses, not to themselves, and even less to other people. After all, a mistake is often followed by unpleasant, sometimes critical, consequences.
This book is written, for the most part, as a conversation with yourself. It doesn’t ask you to repent in front of other people. Society often reads that kind of admission as weakness or defeat, even though deep down we all want to be winners. And there is some truth to that: most of us have more wins than losses. We just feel our mistakes more sharply. A mistake is not a mark of failure; it’s simply a signal that the problem needs a different solution. If you examine it under the microscope with a cool head and understand why it didn’t work, you will get much further toward success than if you blindly run away, trying to forget the failure as fast as you can.
One lie, as we know, drags another behind it. I’m not a moralist, and I understand that total bluntness isn’t always the right call. There are situations where the truth, spoken harshly and at the wrong moment, doesn’t help. It wounds. But this book is not about that. It’s about a different kind of lie: the one you tell yourself. That lie is more dangerous, because it doesn’t really protect you; it simply keeps you from seeing what is actually going on. If you keep turning a blind eye to your own mistakes and winding that tangle tighter, it will be far harder to unravel in the end.
In business literature, the story is often built around success, money, and peace of mind reached through a defined set of steps. Such books are useful, but they often walk past the most uncomfortable part of the work, examining real misses, false hypotheses, and decisions that looked reasonable only in the moment.
This book takes a different route. At its core are the experience of working in places where there are always more problems than time, the analysis of mistakes in real products, and the attempt, every time, to separate the observable fact from the tidy explanation that quiets the mind a little too quickly.
The aim of this book is to give you a set of working questions that help you see the problem more precisely before you start looking for a solution. In business and in personal life, we often spend our resources not on the problem itself but on the first convenient version of it: we mask symptoms, mistake temporary patches for long-term solutions, and avoid contradictions we should have dealt with earlier.
The book is built as a working route through systems analysis, TRIZ, practical psychology, communication, and hypothesis testing. This route exists so that you can:
- Check strong emotions and hasty conclusions against observable facts.
- Test decisions with small actions before investing months, money, and reputation in them.
- Treat conflicts as working problems rather than battles over who is right.
The book follows the principle of minimalism. Each chapter is a complete step consisting of three elements: a breakdown of a self-deception, a systems tool, and a practice section.
From here, we will start at the very source, where the mistake is usually born: how a person names the problem, and which of their own versions of reality they accept as fact.
Introduction. You’re Fighting the Wrong Problem

The most unpleasant thing about a wrongly chosen problem is that it rarely looks wrong. Usually it’s the opposite. It has logic, facts, and energy. Everything seems properly assembled: the person thinks, acts, and tries hard. From the outside, it looks like work on the problem. But then a strange feeling appears: more and more effort, less and less clarity.
There’s plenty of action. More and more discussion. Attempt after attempt. But inside, a suspicion slowly grows that the issue isn’t speed, or character, or the amount of force applied. Maybe the problem itself was defined wrong from the very start, and that’s not a particularly pleasant thought.
Laziness is easier to deal with: you can pull yourself together, set a deadline, add discipline, or ask for help. So is faulty execution: find the failure, redo, clarify, fix. But what do you do with a situation where you honestly invested yourself, made decisions, endured, built plans, and then it turned out that all along you were solving the wrong problem, even though you felt certain you had hit the very heart of it?
And this is where the real work begins.
It rarely looks inspiring. Rather the opposite. It includes a moment when you have to stop and admit: the problem is not at all where it seemed obvious.
- The business isn’t growing, and the first thing that comes to mind: we need advertising.
- The team is stalling, so we must need tight control.
- Customers aren’t buying, so we urgently need to rewrite the landing page, cut the price, or add features.
- The conversation isn’t working, so we need to explain one more time, in more detail, more convincingly.
Each of these thoughts may hold part of the truth. That’s exactly what makes them dangerous. A weak thought rarely shows up wearing a sign that says “I’m weak.” It arrives as relief. At last it’s clear what to do. At last there’s a cause, an action, a plan. You can stop agonizing over uncertainty and start fixing. But that first clarity is often not analysis. It is a way to relieve inner tension faster.
There’s a view that good thinking starts with an answer. You see a problem, quickly pull yourself together, make a decision, and act. There’s an appealing image of strength in that: composure, speed, confidence, the ability not to freeze.
But an answer is valuable only after the problem has been defined precisely. Before that, speed can be dangerous. Fast action inside the wrong frame doesn’t save you; it just locks in the mistake with more confidence.
A problem and a task are not the same thing.
A problem is, above all, a tension in reality. Something hurts, stalls, keeps repeating, costs more than it should, breaks plans, drains energy, or blocks the result you need. A problem points to the gap between what is and what should be.
A task comes later. It is already the work of thinking: what exactly needs to change, in which system, under what constraints, with what result, at what cost, and using which resources.
A problem can be murky. A task has to be workable.
And this is where the substitution most often happens. A person takes a murky tension and treats it as if it were already a precise task. The symptom gets called the cause. The first reaction is taken for analysis. The convenient explanation starts to look like a fact.
From that moment on, effort becomes questionable. You can add energy, money, control, arguments, and time. But if the underlying task is defined wrong, all of it works like the engine of a car headed the wrong way. Fuel burns, there’s noise, there’s motion. The trouble is that nobody has honestly checked the direction.
The first version of the problem is almost always incomplete. The brain saves energy and grabs the nearest explanation, especially if it’s familiar, emotionally vivid, or protective of self-esteem:
- “People don’t need this.”
- “I have no discipline.”
- “The team is weak.”
- “Customers don’t understand anything.”
- “I just need to try harder.”
Phrases like these aren’t always false. They may hold a piece of the truth. But a piece of the truth becomes dangerous when it starts posing as the whole truth. It creates a sense of clarity where the fog still stands.
The problem often lives deeper than it seems at first. You can see the pain, but not how the pain is built. You can see the smoke, but not where the fire is. You can see the falling metric, the irritated customer, the missed deadline, the conflict, the fatigue, the anxiety. All of it is real, and none of it should be brushed aside. But a symptom is not yet a task. It is only a signal, not a cause.
The symptom is louder than the cause. It presses, irritates, frightens, and demands immediate action. So the natural move almost always goes toward whatever hurts the most. You want to relieve the tension, regain control, and get away from uncertainty.
Useful work begins where a short pause appears between the problem and the action. This is not an invitation to endless analysis, and not an excuse for inaction, just a brief stop for one question: is this the right problem to be solving right now?
This question can ruin a beautiful plan. It can strip away a pleasant confidence. It can reveal that weeks, months, or years have already been spent fighting the convenient version of the problem. It’s an unpleasant question, because it doesn’t care how much effort has been invested. It checks only one thing: whether the task you’ve chosen matches the observable facts.
That’s what makes it uncomfortable. And that’s exactly what makes it useful.
Effort by itself guarantees nothing. You can be hardworking, smart, honest, talented, and still hit dead ends if you keep acting inside the wrong frame again and again.
That sounds harsh, but there is freedom in that kind of certainty. If the result depends on more than sheer force, then you can look for the point where effort actually applies. You can stop endlessly pushing yourself and start examining how the task is built. You can replace self-blame with investigation. Stop confusing the pain with the diagnosis. See where the work actually is.
A workable solution differs from a superficial one not in beauty and not in loudness.
A superficial solution usually presses on the symptom. It adds weight: more manual work, more control, more costs, more explanations, more tension.
A workable solution changes how the task is built. It looks for the place where a small, precise change produces a large effect. For example: remove an unnecessary step, change the wording, find a hidden resource, or separate conflicting requirements. Test a hypothesis with a small action. Move the error to where it becomes cheap. Notice that the problem is not the person but the rules of the system. It isn’t “heroic,” but it works.
The film Cube offers a precise image of this kind of thinking. People find themselves inside a system that doesn’t become any clearer through panic, force, or mutual accusations. The way out appears not where the pressure is greatest, but where the structure becomes more visible: the connections, the constraints, the order of moves, the rules of the system itself.
Life is gentler than that, but the principle is similar. When you don’t understand how a task is built, energy becomes dangerous. It creates the feeling of a fight, but it doesn’t necessarily bring you closer to the way out.
In management, this principle is described by Goldratt’s Theory of Constraints. It shows that a system’s performance doesn’t improve when you press evenly on every stage of production. The key constraint usually sits in one specific bottleneck, yet resources tend to go where the bustle is most visible or psychologically most comfortable.
This book is not a retelling of Goldratt, TRIZ, systems thinking, CBT, NVC, JTBD, or Lean Startup. It uses selected working elements of these approaches as a route for taking problems apart.
So these names don’t sound like passwords for insiders, here is each one in a couple of sentences.
TRIZ is the Theory of Inventive Problem Solving. Its creator, the engineer Genrich Altshuller, studied thousands of patents, looking for the recurring patterns that set strong solutions apart from lucky ones.
Systems thinking is the habit of looking not at a single event but at the connections around it: how the parts of a whole affect one another, and why pushing in one place causes a failure somewhere else.
CBT is the cognitive-behavioral approach, a branch of practical psychology about how a thought quietly slips in between an event and our reaction. In this book it serves only as a clarity tool, not as therapy.
NVC is Nonviolent Communication: a way of talking about hard things through observations, feelings, needs, and requests rather than accusations.
JTBD stands for Jobs To Be Done. It is a way of seeing what people buy and choose as attempts to get a specific life task done, not as “acquiring a product.”
Lean Startup is an approach to launching anything new: every idea is treated as a hypothesis to be tested with small, cheap experiments before you commit serious money and months of work.
TRIZ serves here as the engineering backbone of the author’s adaptation: working with contradictions, resources, the ideal result, and the search for a solution inside the system. The other approaches help you see facts more clearly, formulate the task, account for people, and test ideas against behavior, numbers, and small experiments.
The basic order is simple: first sharpen the problem, then look for the solution. Reverse that order, and it’s easy to end up with convincing action in the wrong direction.
The book’s route runs from simple to complex. First we’ll look at how a person confuses an event with their inner version of the event. Then we’ll see how words narrow the field of solutions in advance.
After that, we’ll work through contradictions, resources, and the ideal result. We’ll look at how hidden connections, cognitive distortions, and communication operate, so that, in the end, we arrive at a workable formulation of the task and test it against facts, people’s behavior, and small experiments.
The main work happens with how you see the problem, where you deceive yourself, what cost you fail to notice, and how you test a solution against external response: numbers, people’s actions, deadlines, and the cost of being wrong. A tool matters only where it helps you do this work with your own hands.
In essence, this is a route toward more clear-eyed analysis. A wrong formulation costs dearly: it takes years, money, energy, relationships, projects, and self-respect. You can try honestly, but if the problem is defined wrong, your effort starts working against you. It locks in the wrong route, deepens the habitual mistake, and makes retreat more and more painful.
That’s why the first win in this book is not finding an elegant solution or learning a new framework. The first win is to stop defending the first version of the problem just because it came first.
The conclusion includes a brief summary to help you quickly recall the key steps of each chapter and find your bearings on the map.
Practice
To start, take one real problem that actually exists right now: in a project, at work, in a relationship, or with money.
You can break it down into three different versions:
- The first version: how the problem sounds right away, uncensored and unpolished.
- The second version: what in it can be checked through observation, numbers, actions, deadlines, messages, or events.
- The third version: what has been layered on top, fears, guesses, other people’s motives, forecasts, generalizations, old explanations, habitual verdicts on yourself or the world.
Example:
- First version: “Nobody needs my project.”
- Second version (checkable): “In fourteen days there were twelve sign-ups and zero payments.”
- Third version: “the market isn’t ready,” “the product is too complex,” “people don’t see the value,” “we urgently need to change the whole concept.”
Some of these explanations may turn out to be true. But first they need to be seen for what they are, explanations. As long as they pose as reality, they steer your actions without your awareness.
The point of the exercise is to make the first crack in the certainty that the first version of the problem is already the truth.
The exercises in this book won’t promise instant transformation. Their job is different: to bring your thinking back, every time, to the facts, the system, the people, the cost of the decision, and the test.
This is where a deliberate request for testing begins: not searching for an elegant scheme, but honestly separating the observable fact from the name we gave the event.
It starts with a simple admission: right now I may be arguing not with the situation itself, but with the name I gave it. If the name is wrong, the solution will miss too.
Next, we’ll go deeper and examine the place where the mistake appears before the task itself: between the event, the thought, the reaction, and the action.
